Given how indisputably tough our economic climate has been these past 18 months, one would think that both companies and their sales forces would be hungry for anything that would help them to get back on their feet quicker—but remarkably that is not the case. If you have missed recent reports, increasingly economists are now cautiously telling us they believe the recession is either over or nearly over. Now is definitely the time to start positioning yourself and your company for success.
I understand that cost cutting measures have everyone running so incredibly lean right now that it is difficult to see beyond each day—yet that is exactly what BOTH individuals and companies must do if they are to reap any of the rewards of the coming days. If you wait, you will get left behind. The title of this article may have you a bit perplexed at this point. Why are we talking about positioning when the title is about vegetables and chocolate cake?
Vegetables are those things which we know we must eat in order to be healthy. In fact, we need a steady diet of them every single day. And, on those days when we don’t eat our vegetables we don’t operate as efficiently. If we go for several days without them we start to feel sluggish and our bodies start to give us other warning signs that things are just not quite right. However, just knowing that things aren’t quite right isn’t really enough “pain” for most of us to change our ways and improve our eating habits. In general, most of us don’t change things until the “pain” of doing the same old same old becomes greater than the pain of actually changing to do something else or to make the needed improvement. You see, the Chocolate Cake gives us immediate gratification. It is so YUMMY! And, it is just sitting right there calling to us, willing us to devour it. It takes a lot of will power to avoid its siren song. Instant gratification or instant consequences of any type will almost always win over long term gain or long term consequences. BUT, to be successful in the long term, we must put off those things that give us instant gratification for the health and well being of the body. Oh sure, as long as you are eating that healthy diet and doing the right things day in and day out, you can still have that piece of Chocolate Cake—you just can’t make it the mainstay of your diet.
Are you with me on this analogy?
